The Immigration Clinic Receives 27 Approvals over Winter Break

The Winter Break has been busy for the William & Mary Law School Immigration Clinic. Since the end of classes in December, the Immigration Clinic has received 27 approvals on a variety of applications submitted by the Clinic over the last year. Among those 27 approvals were approvals for asylum, lawful permanent residency, DACA, Temporary Protected Status, and work authorization. Of the applications to receive approvals, six were applications filed by students in the Fall 2023 semester.

The majority of the approvals received were for work authorization for Afghans meant as a stopgap when their future in the United States was unclear. Last Spring, Clinic students mobilized to ensure that our Afghan clients would be able to maintain their lawful status and eligibility to work in the United States by filing for Temporary Protected Status and accompanying work authorization. Of the 22 work authorization applications submitted as this stopgap, over three-quarters have been approved so far.

“This many approvals in such a short period of time is incredible both for our clients and our students,” said Clinic Professor Nicole Medved. “Each application takes an incredible amount of time, organization, and attention to detail on the part of our students, especially when they prepare applications for entire families as many of them did in these cases. These approvals show the high caliber of work that our students are doing in every assignment they receive.”
