On November 4th, Immigration Clinic Director Stacy Kern-Scheerer and Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow Nicole Alanko spoke to students from WMFIRE, William & Mary’s undergraduate student group dedicated to advocating for immigrant students and the immigrant community. Stacy and Nicole focused their talk on challenges facing immigrants in Hampton Roads, including access to counsel and language access.
“Speaking to student groups is always such a pleasure,” said Nicole. “Students, especially undergraduate students, always bring a fresh perspective and energy to challenges we see every day. It’s so refreshing to hear new questions and perspectives, especially from students who are so passionate about engaging with and supporting immigrants in our community.”
“The discussion with the Immigration Clinic was not only important in the sense of education regarding issues affecting the undocu+ community, but it was also motivating to see the on-the-ground work that attorneys and volunteers do,” said Lucia Aracely Garica, ‘22, Director of WMFIRE. “I, along with many others, appreciate seeing immigration through the legal lens, while also learning about different opportunities we can use to contribute and aid those in need. It accentuates how essential community support is for everyone to thrive.”
“Due to the political arena, many people are being drastically impacted and it’s amazing to know there are people helping those who are being affected,” said Eva Ortiz, ‘24, Treasurer of WMFIRE. “During the discussion with the Immigration Clinic, I was able to learn more about what they do and I’m happy that WMFIRE as an organization is also helping out by raising money and awareness for the Immigration Clinic and immigrant community. Overall it was a great experience and it has encouraged me to do more in support!”
In conjunction with the event, WMFIRE is holding a plant raffle until Thursday, November 11th to fundraise for the Clinic.
