December 10th is recognized by the United Nations as Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day commemorates the day in which the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Immigration Clinic’s work is directly tied to making the vision of the Declaration a reality. Many clients of the Immigration Clinic have come to the United States to escape persecution because they were asserting their basic human rights, such as gender equality, freedom of movement, freedom of association, freedom of opinion. Students representing these clients have the opportunity to learn about the Universal Declaration, as well as other international treaties and research to further our clients’ cases. After their time in the Clinic, students are better prepared to defend human rights in whatever field they enter.
This year has been difficult, but our students have been resilient and resolute in their support and work for our clients’ human rights. As we look forward to the next year, we strive to make the vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights a reality.
